Music video analysis

Video
Childish Gambino- Bonfire
Post malone- congratulations
Sam Smith- Im not the only one
Which genre? How do you know? What generic features do you see (e.g. dance routine: dance/pop music) Sound – genre, instruments, lyrics, emotion

Rap- The lyrics clearly show this, plus the fast pace video fits the pace of the rap

Rap- the lyrics show how this is a rap song, Plus theres a lot of drink and drugs which are stereotypical of a rap video
Pop/ slow- the song is very slow but has a mainstream pop chorus.
Performance/narrative/concept?
How much of each? Which parts? (e.g performance in chorus, narrative in verse)
How does this link to genre?

A concept video of life after death, Shown as it starts with a noose around his neck

This is a performance video as there aren’t any wacky ideas story being told and its just post signing and dancing
This is a narrative music video with a director credit at the start and story being presented through out the video
Representation
DRCAGES
SETTINGS
THEMES
There is an equal representation of black and white ethnicity and gender through out the video
There is no specific intention representation of any ethnicity or gender, just a representation of younger generations
There is a representation of the stereotypical business male who likes to drink and cheat with his spare time, there is also a representation of a distressed wife who is struggling to cope with her husband and life
Camera shots – which types?
What variety of shots is there?
What are shots of?
Are there shots of artist? How many? What are they doing/type?

The video is mainly shot from mid range with not many close ups or long shots

The camera angles are mainly mid range to get post body in to show his dancing
There are a lot of slowed close up shots to show the actors facial expressions and its sowed to match the song
Editing – How are camera shots edited? What is the pace like? How does the editing fit the music

Fast cuts through out the video, with no special effects or special transitions
There is a lot of slo mo party scenes with lots of alcohol spilling in slo mo for cool effect
The shots are slowed to match the song and mood
Mise-en-scene – comment on costume, setting, hair, props, make up, facial expressions etc
How does this fit genre?

Theres a great effect with the blood/ vomit at the start using good props
There are a lot of drugs and money in the video, There are also loads of lights and colour changes maybe representing a club or party
It looks like the female is wearing a wedding dress and the male is wearing a suit, maybe meaning they have just got married or they are wearing them as a metaphor for a marriage getting split up
How does the artiste want to be seen? Does it link with any of their other videos? Who does the video appeal to?

He wants to be seen as energetic and aggressive in his raps and videos

The  artist wants to be seen as if he does what he wants and he wants people to know he has made it in the rap world.
The artist wants to appeal to an audience who have felt the emotions and issues he has felt, The song is fairly open to interpritation and this makes it more applieable to multiple audiecnes

Charity advert

Old spice booklet answers

Old spice
Answers
  • Created in 1934 for women
  • The aim of the campaign is to appeal to what the ideal man wants in life e.g muscly physic, wrestling with sharks to appear manly
  • The smell like a man video campaign was first aired on February 7th 2010
  • The videos went viral with comic remakes all over facebook and youtube which is where the original video also went viral.
  • This advert shows a man using old spice whilst riding a large bike with a woman gazing up to him. This shows that by using old spice you get an awesome moustache, an awesome bike and jacket and you all become a hit with the ladies. All these things are what the audience of the ad want in life so will buy the product to fell like the man in the ad.

  • Original ads didn’t featured the idea of a mans heaven however they did feature pictures of the product and what it looks like along with a catchy slogans about being a Man. Not to the scale of today but there were still ideas of how only real men buy this product almost 60 years ago
  • P and G were one of old spices largest competitors and brought old spice in 1990.
  • There are a lot of issues with the ads old spice have in the modern world as some people view them as sexist as they are saying this is what a man wants however a few men don’t want that and there fore its sexist.
  • Isaiah Mustafa was used in these adverts as he is a stereotypical mans man, with good looks and a ideal physic.

  • The aim of the advert is to portray great things such as a hot beach, blue skys and a good looking man. By displaying these images it makes people want to buy the product.
  • They use comical language to make the product not appear to intense and there fore meaning it wont smell to intense either.
  • The adverts represent males as good-looking and muscly
  • The advert represents the product as a non intense scent that smells like the Bahamas.

Shelter advert questions

Shelter advert questions
Answers

  • Audience
  • The target audience of the ad is anyone who can or feels the need to donate
  • Shock tactics are used to really shock the audience and intensify the feelings of empathy and sympathy
  • Shelter
  • Shelter are a charity that offer financial and housing advice
  • Analysing the ad
  • The aim of the ad is too raise awareness of housing issues, they used quotes that people who need the help are likely to of used or heard making the ads more reliable.
  • The main messages of the ad is too portray the real shock and sadness that comes with housing issues. This is done by using a shocked and sad facial expression which is present on all three of the models. The text is written in a large red font placed directly on the models faces making the advert stand out and literally be in your face.
  • Shelter really value the prevention of losing a house, meaning stopping the problem before it becomes and issue. In there advert they say they help thousands of people each year really emphasising how they value helping the people.
  • There is a representation of an asian/ white community within the adverts, with no feature of a black skinned actor. There is also two female actors to the one male actor however with three ads there will always be an imbalance. This may be because people from asian communities or white people are statistically more likely to be affected by housing issues and by using these types of actor it makes them more relatable to the people who need the help
  • Social context
  • east midlands- 5440 homeless people
  • London- 24543 homeless people
  • England- 81000 homeless people
